Afterschool Student Expo!

Student Robotics Project

 

High-quality afterschool programs provide students with a wide range of opportunities, from academic enrichment to developing leadership skills and building relationships with caring adults. During the 21st Century Community Learning Center Student Expo, students from around Minnesota displayed the skills and talents they developed in afterschool programs with teachers and youth workers. Kevin from the Minneapolis Community Education’s Folwell afterschool program proudly shares his robotics project.


A Decade at the Top!

For the tenth year in a row, Minnesota high school seniors were top in the nation on the ACT, among states in which at least 50 percent of graduates took the test. Minnesota seniors posted an average score of 22.7, compared to the nationwide average of 21. "The ACT is one of the best indicators we have to show that our students are prepared for career and college," Commissioner Brenda Cassellius said.

Building Strong Readers in Minnesota

New America’s Early Education Initiative, Building Strong Readers in Minnesota: PreK-3rd Grade Policies That Support Children’s Literacy Development. Read the newly released report, written by Abbie Lieberman and Laura Bornfreund with support from the McKnight Foundation.

St. Paul Airport Event Steers Girls to Tech Careers

Read 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Guest post, by Brainerd Youth Librarian Darcy Dwyer. The brochures about our new, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, were barely out of the box when librarians began receiving very positive feedback from parents. Within six weeks, one mom had already read 500 books to her three-year-old daughter and we had to tell her that our printer had not yet delivered our 500-750 book log when she requested it! Five-Time Reward School Honorees

2015 Reward School logo: Five time winners!

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) recently released the 2015 Multiple Measurement Ratings (MMR). The ratings provide a comprehensive look into how schools are performing, taking into account student proficiency, growth, achievement gap reduction and graduation rates. As part of the MMR, each year MDE recognizes the top 15 percent highest performing Title I schools in the state. These schools are designated as Reward Schools. While some schools have been recognized as Reward Schools multiple times, only 14 schools have been recognized five times in a row! Read full story in bloggED.
