Scott Wilson and a Christmas Tree

Meet a MAWQCP-certified producer: Scott Wilson

Since he first planted trees on the farm in 1980, Scott has been working to implement and improve the farm’s conservation practices. He farms by the motto, “when we take something, we put it back.” When he cuts a tree down, he plants a new one the next year. When he tills his strawberries, he replenishes them with pumpkins and squash. Rotating crops is an important practice on his farm as it ensures time to rebuild essential nutrients and eliminate any potential soil diseases.

Scott learned about the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP) in 2016. As a passionate steward of his land and other nearby resources, like the Minnesota River, Scott knew the MAWQCP would be a perfect fit for him. The MAWQCP helped Scott implement practices that protect his farm and the watershed, like implementing grass waterways to stop erosion, building berms and dikes to mitigate runoff, and upgrading equipment to implement more specialized practices.

Scott's full feature can be read at the We Are Water exhibit, which is currently being hosted at Ney Nature Center in Henderson, MN from August 14 through October 6.

The MAWQCP can be found on the Conservation Connector platform. This platform helps farmers find and take advantage of local opportunities available to them. This resource is a great way to promote programs and provide essential information such as enrollment deadlines, contact information, program requirements, and additional details so farmers can have accurate and updated information about available opportunities.

Looking for an opportunity to promote your program? Create a free listing in the portal here. Simply register or log in, then select Manage Programs or Manage Providers to enter or update your information. A User Guide can be downloaded on this page.

Additional participation will help build trust and clarity in conservation agriculture by allowing farmers to easily find, understand and evaluate programs and services in one place.
