Happy New Year! Our Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) Team is excited to share our focus area for January: Engineering in Agriculture. Featured lessons, virtual field trips, AgMag connections, current events, and more highlight the STEM involved in agriculture!

Virtual Field Trip

Join us for a virtual field trip to Christensen Farms Pig Research Farm

When: Friday, January 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.  

What: Join us to explore the unique features and engineered design of a modern pig barn. We'll meet the pigs and learn how they are raised on this Christensen Farms site near St. James, MN. You will also learn about the research that is being done in this barn that helps Minnesota pig farmers continue to raise healthy pigs.

This virtual field trip will also be streamed live on YouTube and a recording will be available for later viewing. 

Pigs on the Farm is an engaging lesson that can connect this virtual field trip to STEM learning with K-2 and 3-5 students.

Save the Date: 2023 Farm and Food Book Week

MAITC is excited to host the third annual Farm and Food Book Week! Plan to join us on Zoom, February 21-24, 2023, at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. each day for virtual agriculture-themed book readings by special guest readers. Additional details will be shared by the end of January.

New Farm Camp Director: Wanda Patsche

Wanda Patsche joined the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom team as a Resource Specialist from 2017-2021.  She has rejoined our MAITC team in a new role: Farm Camp Director! As the new Farm Camp Program Director, Wanda is looking forward to connecting educators, AgHosts, and students to provide an immersive hands-on Farm Camp experience.

Wanda is excited about her new role with Minnesota Ag in the Classroom and can’t wait to make awesome connections for students, educators, and AgHosts.

National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference Scholarships

This snowy start to 2023 has us looking forward to the National Agriculture in the Classroom National Conference in Orlando, Florida, June 26-29, 2023! This conference attracts K-12 teachers from across the country. These educators gain ideas and inspiration for integrating agriculture into their curriculum! Two scholarship opportunities are available to support K-12 educators in attending:

CHS Foundation Scholarship

The CHS Foundation is offering scholarships to pre-kindergarten-12th grade teachers to attend the 2023 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference. Fifty scholarships will be awarded to teachers to cover the conference registration cost. The application deadline is February 15, 2023.

Native American Agriculture Fund Scholarship Program

The Native American Agriculture Fund (NAAF) is partnering with National Agriculture in the Classroom to offer scholarships to teachers of Native American ancestry or who teach Native American students to attend the 2023 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference. Eligible applicants are teachers at a Tribal government operated school, a Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) school or a BIE-supported school; a school on a reservation teaching Native American students, a non-reservation school that has a high percentage of Native American students, or teachers with a Tribal affiliation. The NAAF Scholarship includes conference registration, flight costs and hotel expenses. The application deadline is February 15, 2023.
