K-6 teachers, when you're ready to think about next school year, visit mnagmag.org to sign up for the FREE AgMag series that features two grade-specific issues in print and online for each K-6 grade level. AgMag is a perfect accompaniment to traditional textbooks and resources, offering close-to-home examples about producers and agricultural business to help kids connect with agriculture and learn more about how food and goods get from the farm to their home.
Farm Camp Minnesota and Redwood Area Chamber & Tourism partnered to create a Virtual Fifth Grade Ag Day to fourteen classrooms and 286 students!
MAITC's Farm Camp provided lesson plans, technical support, and consistent communication with educators, while the Chamber Ag Committee found the AgHosts (farmers) and created a fun Ag Kit mailed to the classrooms, including samples of pig feed to engage the students during the Farrow to Finish Hog Farm Tour. Students zoomed in to four farm tours covering everything from corn and soybeans to lambs, pigs and cattle, oh my!
"I think the whole day in general was great! Viewing the farms close up and in parts of the farms the normal person wouldn't see was a great experience for the kids," said Paul Carlson from Redwood Valley Middle School.
Farm tours were only one part of the Farm Camp experience. Prior to Ag Day, teachers taught in-classroom lessons from MAITC to engage the students and create baseline knowledge of what they would see on Ag Day. The Redwood Valley FFA provided a video STEM lesson for the fifth graders to learn about barn specifics and engineer their own barn on Ag Day in between tours.
"This collaborative effort is what we would love to see across the state of Minnesota with Ag organizations partnering with schools to provide an interactive ag experience for students. Farm Camp is the bridge that connects educators and AgHosts while providing logistics support and resources to make for a successful, immersive agricultural experience," adds Ann Vote, Farm Camp Program Director.
