In 2023, Governor Walz signed an interagency budget for housing stability that is the biggest investment in housing and homelessness in state history. It included $100 million in funds for emergency shelter providers across the state to plan and design, acquire, and renovate, or construct, shelters — intending to improve existing spaces and increase the availability of shelter beds.
On September 15, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe broke ground on one of these shelters, a new building in Bena focused on families.
