Join the webinar today from 1:00 -2:00 p.m. to hear from Josh Leopold with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Dr. Kate Vickery and Peter Bodurtha with the Health, Homelessness, & Criminal Justice Lab at Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute. They will preview the findings from their homeless mortality study. This study was conducted as part of MDH’s Center of Excellence on Public Health and Homelessness. The researchers compared age and causes of death for people experiencing homelessness (based on Homeless Management Information Systems data) to the general population in Minnesota from 2017 to 2021. They found that the mortality rate for people experiencing homelessness was several times higher than the general population. While people experiencing homelessness were at elevated risk of dying from a variety of causes, including heart disease, COVID-19, and diabetes, the leading cause of death was related to substance use. This includes fatal overdoses, most frequently from Fentanyl, and conditions caused by chronic substance use. On the webinar, we will discuss the findings of the analysis in more detail and discuss implications and next steps.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has launched a multi-site project to better understand knowledge gaps regarding vector-borne diseases spread by body lice and fleas among staff and volunteers serving people experiencing homelessness. The CDC is looking for shelter staff and street outreach workers to take an anonymous survey (30-45 minutes) about vector-borne diseases spread by body lice and fleas. The CDC will use survey responses to improve efforts aimed at prevention of flea- and louse-borne diseases among persons experiencing homelessness; identify areas for improvement in the provision of services to persons experiencing homelessness; and develop educational materials for homeless service providers. Each survey respondent will receive a Target gift card. If your shelter or outreach team is interested participating in the survey, please email josh.leopold@state.mn.us.
The Supportive Housing Alliance, formerly known as the Stewardship Council, is an interagency working group whose purpose is to directly impact the creation, preservation, and stabilization of supportive housing as a key component in Minnesota’s work to prevent and end homelessness. The Supportive Housing Alliance has embarked on a project to establish supportive housing standards and align service, operating and capital funding resources to strengthen and simplify the process for creating quality supportive housing across the state of Minnesota. They met with a deep bench of supportive housing providers, tribal and state leaders, and people with lived experience across the state to develop recommendations for supportive housing standards, which are described in this report.
The Supportive Housing Alliance has used these recommendations to develop a draft of supportive housing standards, as well as an outline of operating guidelines that will provide more context, suggestions, and promising practices to successfully implementing the supportive housing standards. Learn more by reviewing the draft supportive housing standards and operating guidelines outline.
The Supportive Housing Alliance wants to hear your feedback on the draft supportive housing standards. There are a few ways you can provide your thoughts:

Cases among people experiencing homelessness and the staff who support continues to remain steady.
