News from HomeHelpMN
The HomeHelpMN program will begin accepting applications for assistance on Tuesday, May 17. The application period will be open through Friday, June 17, but homeowners should not wait to apply.
HomeHelpMN provides assistance for homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage or other eligible housing-related expenses due to effects of the pandemic. Eligible homeowners may receive up to $35,000 in assistance for past-due expenses.
Funds for the program are limited, and need is expected to be high. If applications received during the application period exceed available funding, applicants may be put on a wait list. Homeowners should submit their applications as soon as possible after the application period begins.
For more information about the program, including who is eligible to apply and what expenses are covered, visit HomeHelpMN.org or call 1-800-388-3226. The Call Center is open Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. A Language Line is available to provide access for callers who prefer a language other than English.

In the event of high demand for funds, the funds may be fully allocated before the date the application period closes. Homeowners are encouraged to submit their applications early in the application period. A submitted application is not a guarantee of funding availability.

New Income Limits Released
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released new income limits for all Homeowner Assistance Fund programs, including HomeHelpMN, effective April 18, 2022. These new limits, which are higher than the 2021 amounts, will be used to determine eligibility for HomeHelpMN.
Other steps you can take today:
There are steps you can take today that can help preserve your home and help you be prepared for the opening of the HomeHelpMN program. If you are concerned about your ability to make your mortgage payments, we recommend that you pursue these options now, regardless of your interest in the program:
-
Contact your mortgage loan servicer to discuss options. Whether you are currently in forbearance, exiting forbearance, have missed one or more payments, or are worried about falling behind, this is the first step to resolving your concerns.
-
Make an appointment with a HUD-certified housing counselor/homeownership advisor. Minnesota’s counseling network can help you navigate applications, communicate with your lender, and connect you with additional programs and resources that can provide assistance. Visit the Minnesota Homeownership Center to find an advisor. These services are free of charge and confidential. Many advisors offer virtual appointments.
-
Apply for Energy Assistance. Homeowners may qualify for help with energy bills and future energy costs, including delivered fuels. Visit the Minnesota Department of Commerce or call 800.657.3710 to learn more about eligibility and apply.
-
Stay alert to avoid fraud. Scam activity is on the rise from people pretending to offer foreclosure help or government grants. You can learn more at stophomescams.org.
