Hello Neighbors,
This past weekend marked the close of the 2026 legislative session, my final session in the Minnesota House as I prepare to retire from public service at the end of this term. Serving our communities at the Capitol has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am proud of the work we accomplished this year to deliver meaningful results for Minnesotans. From fighting for tax relief and lowering tab fees to strengthening fraud prevention and supporting rural hospitals, we stayed focused on the issues that matter most to hardworking families across our state.
This session, our focus was on delivering practical wins for Minnesotans and standing up for taxpayers across the state. We worked to provide meaningful property tax relief, lower car tab fees, strengthen fraud prevention and oversight, support rural and critical access hospitals, improve school safety, and invest in roads, bridges, and water infrastructure. We also advanced reforms to improve Medicaid accountability and modernize county systems to better safeguard taxpayer dollars. At the same time, we successfully pushed back against proposals that would have increased taxes, raised vehicle fees, and added costly mandates that would have driven up costs for families, schools, local governments, and employers.
In a non-budget year, we did pass a school safety package for mental health grants and anonymous threat reporting. Additionally, we passed a 10 million hold harmless package for compensatory revenue to help the schools most negatively impacted by the 2023 education budget changes.
One of the bright spots in the House this session was the leadership of Speaker Lisa Demuth. Her professionalism and ability to treat every member and every issue with respect gives me great hope for the State of Minnesota. With tied membership (67 Republicans and 67 Democrats) in the House of Representatives, along with the unspeakable violence against members last summer, she held the institution together and we finished on time and we did good work for Minnesota. Speaker Lisa Demuth is a wonderful leader that has already begun to repair the fractures of a very divisive Minnesota.
