Dear Friends and Neighbors,
With all committee deadlines now behind us, the focus at the Minnesota House of Representatives has shifted entirely to the House floor. With just a few weeks remaining, work is moving quickly as lawmakers debate and vote on the final bills of the session. The priority is to finish strong by advancing measures that lower costs, protect taxpayer dollars, and address key issues affecting families on the Iron Range and across Minnesota before the constitutional deadline.
Working to Support our Miners
I am pleased to share that HF 3393 has taken an important step forward in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The bill recently passed out of the Ways and Means Committee and has been placed on the General Register, making it eligible for a vote on the House floor this session. This legislation is focused on supporting our iron ore miners by extending unemployment benefits for workers who have been impacted by layoffs, providing additional stability for families during uncertain times.
On the Iron Range, mining jobs are the foundation of our communities and local economy. When layoffs occur, the impact is felt far beyond the worksite. That is why I authored this bill to ensure miners have the support they need while they get back on their feet and continue contributing to our region’s future. With only a short time left in the session, I am working to have HF 3393 calendared for a floor vote so we can pass this important legislation and deliver real support for our miners and their families.
Making Progress on the Housing Bill
I am glad to report that HF 1141 continues to gain momentum in the Minnesota House of Representatives. After advancing through committee with strong support, the bill reached the Ways and Means Committee this week and is now on the General Register, making it eligible to be scheduled for a vote on the House floor. This legislation takes a comprehensive approach to addressing Minnesota’s housing challenges by expanding opportunities for new development, particularly in Greater Minnesota, while also strengthening accountability and oversight. It includes targeted efforts to support workforce housing, invest in rural communities, and pilot innovative solutions like senior home sharing to help older Minnesotans remain in their homes. By tackling the housing shortage from multiple angles, HF 1141 represents an important step toward ensuring communities across the state have the housing they need to grow, attract workers, and support families.
Veterans Day on the Hill
On Thursday, we recognized Veterans Day at the Capitol, taking time to honor the service and sacrifice of those who have worn our nation’s uniform. I had the opportunity to meet with local veterans from the Disabled American Veterans chapters in Hibbing, Minnesota and Virginia, Minnesota, and I am grateful for the chance to hear their stories and thank them personally. These conversations are a powerful reminder of the dedication and sacrifice our veterans have made in defense of our country, and it was an honor to recognize them at the Capitol. Thank you to all veterans for your courage and sacrifice for our nation.
An Exciting New Project!
I am pleased to share that construction is now underway on a major broadband expansion in central Aitkin County, bringing fast, reliable, all-fiber internet to more than 2,400 homes and businesses. This project, led by Paul Bunyan Communications, will serve communities like McGregor, Palisade, and Tamarack, along with several surrounding townships. This is a big win for residents across the area. Reliable high-speed internet is no longer a luxury. It is essential for work, school, healthcare, and staying connected. Expanding this kind of infrastructure helps families, supports local businesses, and strengthens the long-term future of these communities. Construction will continue through the summer, with service expected to be available by winter, and it is encouraging to see this kind of investment being made right here at home.
