Legislative Update
Hello friends,
As this session continues to move quickly, we are approaching an important milestone with third deadlines set for tonight at 5:00 p.m. These deadlines mark a critical point in the legislative process, where bills must advance or risk falling off the path forward. Throughout this fast-paced period, we remain focused on delivering results that matter most, including strengthening our schools, supporting students and families, and advancing practical, common-sense solutions. As we continue moving towards adjournment, I will keep you updated on our work on important legislation.
Updates from the Capitol
Another priority this session has been ensuring our students are safe and our schools remain strong. Every child should be able to walk into school focused on learning, and every parent should feel confident their child is protected. That’s why we are proud to support the Safety in Our Schools initiative, a package built on bipartisan, common-sense solutions designed to protect students in every community.
This initiative takes a flexible, multilayered approach. It increases safety funding for public, nonpublic, and Tribal schools so all schools have access to critical resources. It also expands support for student mental health, recognizing that safety includes caring for the whole child. In addition, it provides communities with tools like anonymous threat reporting systems and updated safety plans to help stop potential dangers before they escalate. Finally, it includes student discipline reforms aimed at fostering respectful, orderly learning environments where every student can succeed.
Despite the practical nature of these proposals, progress has been slowed by legislative gridlock. Our students, families, and educators deserve action. We remain committed to advancing these solutions because keeping children safe should always rise above politics.
You can watch my speech from the floor this week here.
