Legislative Update
Dear friends and neighbors,
I hope you had a wonderful Easter and Passover last week and were able to spend meaningful time with family and loved ones. We are back in St. Paul after the break, and the pace at the Capitol is picking up quickly as we enter the final weeks of the legislative session. With key budget negotiations underway and important policy discussions ongoing, this is a critical time to focus on solutions that strengthen our communities, protect taxpayers, and support opportunities for families across Minnesota.
Preserving Girl's Sports
This week, the House considered three bills focused on preserving opportunities for female athletes: HF12, HF2685, and HF1233. These proposals were designed to protect fair competition, maintain a level playing field, and ensure girls continue to have meaningful opportunities to participate and succeed in athletics.
This conversation comes as momentum continues to build at both the national and international levels. The International Olympic Committee has moved toward policies that emphasize fairness, safety, and competitive integrity in women’s athletics. At the federal level, actions related to Title IX have also reinforced the importance of protecting opportunities for female athletes and maintaining fair competition.
Despite this growing support, the three bills did not receive enough votes to pass. All Republican members supported the proposals, but DFL members voted against them, preventing the bills from reaching the 68 votes needed for approval in the tied House. While the legislation did not advance, the discussion highlighted the importance many Minnesotans place on fairness, safety, and opportunity in girls’ sports.
I remain committed to continuing this conversation and working toward solutions that protect opportunities for female athletes and ensure girls have the chance to compete on a fair and level playing field.
Fighting for Affordability
As we continue budget discussions, a key focus is helping Minnesota families keep more of their hard-earned money. Our GOP-sponsored budget proposal package includes several measures aimed at easing everyday costs and improving affordability. This includes reducing car tab fees, expanding property tax refunds, and providing additional tax relief for dependent care and childcare expenses. Other proposals would ensure families don’t pay taxes on tips and overtime, provide options to help cover daycare costs through a tax subtraction, and offer more education funding flexibility through programs like the Student Growth Opportunity (SGO) opt-in. Each of these measures is designed to help working families manage rising costs, keep household budgets balanced, and make life in Minnesota more affordable. Overall, this budget proposal would reduce the state budget even more than we were able to reduce it last year. The important thing to remember though, is that we have to have DFL support on any bill that passes, and they are fundamentally unserious about making these changes for the taxpayers of Minnesota.
To prove my point, the DFL has put forward proposals that would increase taxes, raise car tab fees, and add new costs for families. While their approach would make it harder for households to manage day-to-day expenses, our focus remains on solutions that ease the burden on families, support working Minnesotans, and protect household budgets. As negotiations continue, we will keep advocating for practical, commonsense measures that make life more affordable while ensuring essential services are funded responsibly.
