Hello Neighbors,
The forecast is finally starting to turn a corner, even after last weekend’s snowstorm made a mess of things across our area. I hope you were able to dig out, stay safe, and get back to your routine without too much trouble. These late-season storms are always a reminder of how unpredictable Minnesota weather can be, but it’s encouraging to see signs of warmer temperatures and more typical spring conditions ahead. Just like the weather, things can change quickly this time of year at the Capitol, but we remain focused on getting meaningful work done for the people we serve.
This week, Governor Walz released his supplemental budget proposal, and it included both concerning priorities and a direct shot at the work I’ve been leading. The proposal calls for an additional $50 million cut to special education, bringing the total reduction to $300 million, at a time when schools are already struggling to meet student needs. On top of that, the Governor suggested cutting nonpublic pupil aid and transportation funding if Minnesota opts into the federal Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) tax credit program. That doesn’t make sense. Minnesotans are already eligible to donate to SGOs in other states and receive the tax credit, but current law prevents those same dollars from supporting students here at home. Opting in is a common-sense step that would bring resources into Minnesota, not take them away. I will continue pushing back on these proposals and advocating for policies that actually support students, families, and schools across our state.
As we continue our work here at the Capitol, closing in on key legislative deadlines, I will be a strong advocate for school choice and strategic funding, among other main priorities. Back in district, I encourage you to check out the Bunny Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday!
By the way, we only have a few weekends left of Lent! Make sure to check out a fish fry today, with options including Herbies and Cary's on the Course.
