Legislative Update from Rep. Warwas

Update on the OIG Bill 

Our top priority this session is addressing the widespread fraud uncovered in multiple state programs, resulting in millions of dollars of wasted taxpayer money. My colleagues have raised concerns for years, and it is clear that action is long overdue. That is why we are advancing a bipartisan, bicameral proposal to create an Independent Office of the Inspector General. The legislation has already received overwhelming bipartisan support in the Senate last year, reflecting broad agreement that stronger oversight and accountability are needed. We are continuing to build on that momentum and work with colleagues in both chambers to move this proposal toward final passage. So far, we have not had success passing the bill out of the State Gov. Committee, but the OIG working group is starting back up next week, which is a positive sign. 

Meeting with MCCL 

Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to meet with members of the executive team from Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life to discuss the importance of protecting life, creed, and conscience. We had thoughtful conversations about the work being done to advocate for these fundamental values across Minnesota. I sincerely appreciate the dedication and commitment of Don, Kathy, and Ellie, and I am grateful for the important work they do to serve families and communities throughout our state. 

UMD Chancellor Dr. Charles Nies 

Last Thursday, I had a great conversation with Charles Nies, Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Duluth. We discussed the exciting potential for a federal partnership with the Natural Resources Research Institute to establish a “Mine of the Future” proving ground, possibly located on the Iron Range. It was an encouraging discussion focused on innovation, responsible resource development, and expanding economic opportunity in northern Minnesota. I look forward to continuing this conversation! 

Happy Retirement to Jason Akerson! 

It was an honor to attend the retirement celebration for Jason Akerson, Undersheriff with the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, this past Saturday. Jason has dedicated more than three decades of service and self-sacrifice to the communities of the Iron Range. A highly respected leader and decorated law enforcement officer, Jason set a high standard through his humility, professionalism, and commitment to public safety. Congratulations to Jason on a well-earned retirement, and thank you for your years of outstanding service. 

Running into a Friend! 

It was a pleasure to see Kirstie Hall at the Capitol this week. Moments like these are refreshing as I spend most of my hours during session away from home and apart from family and friends. As always, I am hopeful that more Rangers will feel compelled to visit the Capitol. Whether you want to meet with me about an issue that needs attention, or just to see the grandeur of our Capitol campus, I am always interested in making time for you. 

Meeting with Melissa Finnegan of Recycling and Energy 

Had a great meeting this week with Melissa Finnegan of R/W Recycling and Energy to discuss municipal solid waste and infectious waste challenges. I appreciate Melissa’s time and valuable insights on these important issues affecting the metro and suburban regions. 

Minnesota Milk Reception 

It was a great night at the Minnesota Milk reception earlier this week. I am thankful for their gracious hosting and the opportunity to connect! 

Church Ambassadors Network with the Minnesota Family Council 

I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to connect with 10 pastors from the Church Ambassadors Network. It was a great opportunity to pray, have meaningful conversations, and reconnect with my friend, Pastor Josh Overfors, who is originally from the Iron Range. Josh and I used to both work in maintenance at the Minntac Fines Crusher before he started his work in ministry. Thank you to all of you for the important work you do, working with Representative, Senators and staff throughout the Legislature.
