Legislative Update
Dear friends and neighbors,
I hope you are enjoying the slightly warmer weather this week. I was excited to see some highs in the mid to upper 40s for this week and next. Speaking of the outdoors, I want to wish you all a Happy National FFA week. As an FFA alumni, and now working in the ag industry, I truly understand the benefit and value of the program. I want to say thank you to all the students in our area who remain committed to the program and setting themselves up for a successful and meaningful career in agriculture. Say tuned til the end for a special FFA event this weekend!
Safe Stops for Students
I was proud to present HF3436, the “Safe Stops for Students” bill, in the Transportation Committee this week, where it successfully passed with strong support. I introduced this legislation after hearing from our local police chief about a loophole in current law that was creating unnecessary risks for students at school bus stops. When it was brought to my attention, it was clear that this was a gap that needed to be addressed to better protect kids in our communities.
Working closely with stakeholders and public safety officials, I authored HF3436 to close that loophole and strengthen the law so that students are safer while waiting for and boarding the school bus. School bus stops are one of the most vulnerable points in a child’s day, and even small improvements in policy can make a meaningful difference in preventing accidents and protecting families. This bill represents a practical, commonsense step forward in improving student safety, and I am grateful for the bipartisan support it received as we continue working to ensure every child has a safe trip to and from school.
I look forward to sharing future updates as the bill moves towards the House floor.
Capitol Connections
I was grateful for the opportunity to meet with a few awesome people at the Capitol earlier this week.
First, I met with an athletic trainer to discuss some changes to the law that would greatly improve their ability to do their work. Turns out, the difference between being an athletic trainer and a physical therapist is not all that different, and a small change to their practice law would allow them to do both. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss and connect!
I also had the chance to meet with Lisa from Buckham Library. We had a great conversation and I really appreciated the chance to talk about this great asset in our district and how I can help them be successful. Thank you for coming to meet, Lisa!
In District Opportunities
The annual Kenyon-Wanamingo FFA Alumni Pancake Breakfast is this Saturday (tomorrow!). Come out to the Kenyon VFW from 8-11am to get some pancakes and support scholarships for our local FFA students. I hope to see you there!
Check out a local fish fry if you are able! Here is one at the American Legion Post in Faribault.
