Hello Neighbors,
We are entering the final few days of February, and I am hopeful that March will bring us warmer weather. In the spirit of spring, just a quick reminder to make sure you appropriately wrap up ice fishing for the season and pay attention to the DNR's shelter removal deadlines!
I want to start by highlighting the work of Little Falls Community Schools and their recently announced partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build four or five homes in the area. This is a great example of worthwhile community collaboration, as local students will get the experience in building the homes and Habitat for Humanity will have extra hands to help in the project. Check out this news article for more information, and stay tuned to see the work progress in the coming months and years.
At the Capitol this week, Rep. Bidal Duran introduced two of his bills related to school safety, a critical issue this session. HF 3492 and HF 3495 are both school safety funding bills focused on expanding and redirecting resources to improve security in Minnesota schools. HF 3492 authorizes the commissioner of education to award school safety facility grants aimed at improving protections for students and staff, while also canceling previously appropriated funding for the Northern Lights Express rail project and reallocating those dollars toward school safety investments. HF 3495 builds on existing safety grant programs by expanding eligibility so that nonpublic schools and Tribal contract schools can also access school safety funding, along with providing additional appropriations for those grants. Together, the bills prioritize shifting state resources toward physical safety improvements and broadening which schools can receive state support for security upgrades. You can watch the committee hearing here.
BTW: Check out the Kinship Fish Fry this evening from 4:30 - 7:00 pm at the Little Falls VFW!
