Legislative Update
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
With the regular legislative session now behind us, all eyes are on the final pieces of the state budget. While several major bills are still being negotiated, the Governor will likely call a special session next week to complete the remaining work.
I’m watching a few key bills especially closely like Education Funding, Health, and Human Services. These are core areas that affect the daily lives of Minnesotans, and I believe we need to invest wisely in programs that Minnesotans need most, such as schools or disability services.
Some of the remaining budget bills have been delayed by difficult decisions around affordability and implementation. One health care program that provides undocumented immigrants with free healthcare saw its costs triple from original estimates, raising concerns about long-term sustainability as we face a $6 billion deficit. In education, uncertainty around funding for temporary school staff benefits created budgeting challenges for school districts, leading to staffing cuts, larger class sizes, and reduced course offerings.
A short-term solution is now on the table, and the focus moving forward will be on balancing support for essential services with smart, efficient use of public dollars.
At the same time, we must ensure this funding is used efficiently and doesn’t place added pressure on local property taxes. That’s been a driving principle in my work this session: practical, balanced solutions that reflect both compassion and fiscal responsibility.
Question of the Week: E-Bike Safety
Each week, I’ll be including a short question to hear directly from you. Your input helps guide my work and keeps me grounded in the priorities of our district.
With the growing popularity of E-Bikes and the rise of safety concerns for young riders, pedestrians, and drivers, some local communities have adopted ordinances requiring helmets for younger riders. Would you support a state law requiring helmets for 15- to 18-year-olds when driving an E-Bike?
Your feedback matters, and I look forward to seeing your responses.
Priorities of the Next Generation
It was a pleasure to visit with the Minnetonka High School public policy class this week. We had a thoughtful conversation about the importance of listening across differences, housing affordability, clean water, and civic engagement.
What stood out to me most was their enthusiasm to work together, not to tear each other down, but to find common ground and build a better future. It was also humbling to hear they’ve been following the work I’m doing at the Capitol.
If your son or daughter is interested in public service, I’d love to connect. There are plenty of ways to get involved at the local level this summer, and it’s never too early to start making a difference. Just email, text, or call. I’d be happy to help or meet for coffee.
 Town Hall Highlights
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the recent town hall I participated in. These conversations are essential to understanding your priorities, whether that’s clean water, health care costs, flexible school funding, or supporting our educators.
We heard firsthand from local teachers who appreciated the work done through the Suburban Solutions Caucus, especially our progress on educator pensions and helping get more qualified teachers into the profession.
I’ll continue to advocate for pragmatic, community-driven solutions that reflect the real needs of Minnesotans, especially in the areas of education, environment, transportation, infrastructure, and economic opportunity.
