Dear friends and neighbors on the Iron Range,
My first thought is to mention the wildfires that are currently burning through parts of Northern Minnesota, including our District 7B. These fires are affecting families, homes, local businesses and the natural landscape that so many of us treasure.
I am so grateful to local fire departments, emergency responders, St. Louis County Sheriff’s office, and so many other agencies and volunteers that are working around the clock to contain the damage and protect lives and property. Their bravery and commitment in the face of these dangerous conditions deserve our full support and recognition.
National Police Week
This week, we recognized National Police Week and honored the service, dedication, and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across Minnesota and the country. These men and women put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities and uphold the law.
We also took time to remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Their courage, and the sacrifice of their families, should never be forgotten.
Law enforcement plays a critical role in public safety, from emergency response to crime prevention. They deserve our thanks, our respect, and the resources needed to do their jobs effectively. I am grateful for their service and will continue to support policies that strengthen public safety and back the men and women who wear the badge.
Fighting for our Miners
The fight to extend UI benefits for our miners has been ongoing. This Wednesday evening, Rep. Spencer Igo made a motion to declare urgency so that we could consider the bill to extend unemployment insurance for those that have been laid off on the Iron Range. I was proud to offer my thoughts on the importance of taking this bill up now so that we can provide security and peace of mind to our miners.
This motion required a 2/3 majority in order to even consider the bill, and unfortunately failed on a 70-63 vote. We will continue to push for this measure as long as we need must to get this done for the Range.
The Talon Project
I was excited to hear about more new mineral deposits found at the Talon Metals proposed mine site. Talon Metals Inc. recently made a historic nickel discovery in central Minnesota, which highlights the value and importance of mining in the U.S., and especially in Minnesota. I look forward to seeing them move forward with their plans for the benefit of the Tamarach region, our state, and country!
Southridge School Visit
Senator Farnsworth and I had the chance to meet students from Southridge School at the Capitol. I really enjoy meeting with students, seeing their excitement, and answering questions. Thank you for visiting!

North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity
It was great to see Nathan and Sarah Thompson and the rest of their group from North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity this week. These are great folks in our district and I look forward to volunteering with them this summer!
