Legislative Update
Friends and Neighbors,
Today marks the third and final legislative deadline. All budget and policy bills must have been finalized and passed through committee by noon. Committee chairs and leadership have been negotiating what makes it into these budget bills. But with the House evenly split, these negotiations have been messy, and unfortunately, the product reflects that.
The House appears likely to move forward with a compromise budget framework that only partially reduces the state’s $6 billion deficit. Unfortunately, the root of the problem, the massive, unsustainable government growth driven by Democrats over the past two years, is left largely intact. And even worse, the proposed budget does not balance spending and revenue and leaves a projected $2.226 billion deficit looming just around the corner. This isn’t fiscal responsibility, it’s political convenience.
I’ve been working hard to advance legislation that reflects the values of the people I represent: smaller government, lower taxes, and personal freedom.
Highlighting Priority Bills
I enjoy sharing good ideas that are being discussed this year and this week I’d like to highlight:
HF 812 – Income Tax Reform: This bill eliminates Minnesota’s first income tax bracket, allowing Minnesotans to keep more of their own money, especially the hard-working middle class. An average taxpayer would receive a $1,586 tax cut and families earning median income in our community would receive $1,799 back every year. Just something worth thinking about as Tax Day, April 15th, is just around the corner. That would be some much needed relief for families across the state!
Veterans Day on the Hill
Thank you to the bus full of local Veterans who came to the Capitol on Wednesday to rally as a unified voice for our American Heroes who were willing to put their lives in harm’s way in service to our nation. I’m proud to champion a number of veteran priorities this session including raising the property tax exclusion for disabled American Veterans (HF 194).
Join Me in Milaca – Town Hall April 15
I’d love to hear directly from you. I’ll be hosting a Town Hall Meeting to provide a legislative update and answer your questions. Whether you’re concerned about the budget, taxes, schools, or the direction of our state—I want to hear from you. This is your government, and your voice matters.
Next week the legislature will be on break for Holy Week, so I hope to see you around our community. Thank you for the continued privilege of representing you.
