Rep. Wayne Johnson Responds to New Budget Forecast
ST. PAUL, MN – Minnesota’s latest budget forecast shows that two years of unchecked spending have turned an $18 billion surplus into a nearly $6 billion deficit by Fiscal Year 2028-29. The FY 2026-27 balance has also dropped to $456 million, $160 million lower than prior estimates, as spending growth continues to outpace revenue.
"House Republicans warned that Democrats’ reckless spending and tax hikes would devastate our state’s budget, and now Minnesotans are paying the price, said Rep. Wayne Johnson (R-Cottage Grove). “With a $6 billion deficit looming, we need to rein in spending, find savings, and prevent even more burdens on taxpayers. Raising taxes is not an option—Democrats have already raised them by $10 billion. It’s time for fiscal responsibility and accountability before this crisis gets even worse."
