Representative Erica Schwartz Condemns Disruption of Committee Hearing
ST. PAUL – Representative Erica Schwartz (R-Nicollet), a member of the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee, issued a strong statement today following a disruptive demonstration that took place during a Republican-led House committee hearing. The disruption, which included strong profanity and the use of a bullhorn, occurred during the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee’s first meeting of the session.
“The actions displayed during yesterday’s hearing were deeply disturbing and an insult to the democratic process,” said Rep. Schwartz. “Our committees serve as a critical forum for debate and the exchange of ideas to address pressing issues. Minnesotans expect their elected officials to conduct business in a respectful and productive manner, and that cannot happen when meetings are derailed by profanity-laden interruptions. While I welcome public engagement, there is a clear line between free expression and unlawful disruption.”
Rep. Schwartz emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum in the legislative process. “As a member of the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee, I understand the weight of our responsibilities. Disruptions like these distract from the important work we are here to accomplish, such as addressing the needs of our students, educators, and public safety officials. I have been working tirelessly to review Jeff Brand’s previous bills to identify areas where improvements can be made to better serve the constituents of District 18A. By focusing on thoughtful, effective legislation, we can ensure the needs of our communities are met and that Minnesota continues to thrive.”
The Minnesota House GOP caucus has called on Democratic leaders to address the behavior of their members and supporters.
“I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to denounce actions that disrupt the legislative process and work together to uphold the integrity of this institution,” concluded Rep. Schwartz.
