Legislative Update
This week brought many constituents to the Capital to discuss issues and proposed legislation that are important to our district. Highlights include the Milk Producers having Dairy Day at the Capitol, League of MN Cities, MN Veterinary Medical Professionals, and Citizens for the Arts. On the House Floor the School Resource Officer fixes were addressed. Constituents of our district have voiced opposition to several bills introduced this year.
House Floor Session
On Monday of this week, the House passed a bill to fix the problematic School Resource Officer (SRO) change that became law last year. House Republicans worked very hard to come up with a solution to the problem that involved law enforcement in the process and would get 100% of SROs back into schools, and by all accounts we have done that. The bill now needs final approval in the Senate.
Our Voice Matters
I have heard from many constituents over the last week about two bills in particular - the sanctuary state bill (HF 3459) and the physician assisted suicide bill (HF 1930). The sanctuary state bill has not had a hearing in the House or Senate and does not appear to have the votes to pass on its own. The physician assisted suicide bill has had two hearings so far in the House but has not moved in the Senate. While these bills aren't moving at the speed we've seen over the last year, that doesn't mean they won't come to the House Floor, so I would encourage everyone to keep contacting your legislators and asking them to oppose the bills.
