On Sunday, the unimaginable happened when three brave law enforcement professionals lost their lives in Burnsville. Please join me in praying for them, their families, and the entire Burnsville community during this tragic time. I recorded a short video earlier this week reflecting on this terrible event and the need to support our law enforcement professionals which you can watch here.
On a happier note, I wanted to send a big congratulations to the Andover Girls Hockey team in their victory yesterday at the State Quarterfinal! We will be cheering you on at tonight’s semifinal game at 6pm. Go Huskies!
Partial Fix to Tax Bill Errors
On Monday, the House passed a technical corrections bill to fix some of the errors that were discovered in the 2023 tax bill. We fixed an issue with the standard deduction that would have cost 76% of Minnesota taxpayers $352 million had the error gone unnoticed.
I am disappointed, however, that we did not address another issue in the tax bill related to the Net Operating Loss provision. The legislative intent was to make this provision effective for tax year 2024. However, the original bill contained an effective date of tax year 2023. This provision impacts our job creators who are already struggling to keep their Main Street businesses open. If we do not fix this problem, which both Democrat Tax Chairs pledged to fix over the summer, employers will face an estimated $14.8 million tax increase.
The issues with the 2023 tax bill highlight the problem with one-party control of state government. We need more balance in St. Paul so we can make sure family budgets and Main Street businesses – the backbone of our communities – are our number one priority.
Quick SRO Update
Yesterday, the School Resource Officer (SRO) bill passed unanimously out of the Public Safety committee. After continued discussions with the Majority and stakeholders, and with the addition of some Republican amendments, this bill is back on the path to final passage. The Speaker has stated that the SRO bill will be heard in Ways & Means on Monday, and will be on the floor the following Monday, March 4. I look forward to hearing the bill in the Ways & Means Committee and returning 100% of SROs to schools.
