Dear Friends,
We are back in session this week and it’s great to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of Minnesota. I look forward to submitting a few needed bills and cleaning up a few bills from last year! As a reminder, you can follow my work at the Capitol by viewing the bills I Chief Author here and those I Co-Author here.
One of the first bills we must clean up is the school resource officer (SRO) language. Republicans called for a special session to address this issue prior to the start of the new school year, but the Majority pledged to make this a top priority when we returned. However, now that the legislature has convened and the school year is more than halfway over, we are facing yet another delay. This bill is not on the “fast track” as was initially promised.
This is not a partisan issue. Everyone wants to make sure our students and teachers are safe at school. Parents, educators, and law enforcement have been waiting months for a resolution, but the Majority is refusing to work with Republicans to find a swift solution. On Monday, the very first day of session, we tried to declare an “urgency” to immediately take up a bill to fix this, but the Majority voted our motion down. I will continue fighting for our students and staff until 100% of SROs are back in schools.
It was also great to be back in committee this week. As a reminder, I serve on the Judiciary Finance and Civil Law, Workforce Development Finance and Policy, and Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committees. In Workforce, I spoke about the need to support our workforce to make sure our small businesses can continue to thrive. You can watch those comments here.
There is a lot of work ahead of us and I look forward to keeping you up to date as session progresses.
