Legislative Update
With session coming up this Monday, February 12, I wanted to give you an overview of some of the bills that may come up early in session.
First, we need quick action on the errors in last year's tax bill. There was a $400 million error found after the bill passed that could hurt the state's bottom line and penalize taxpayers if it's not fixed. I hope to see this in the first few days of session.
We also need to quickly fix the school resource officer law that is causing confusion and increased liability for SROs in schools. After the effects of this law came to light, more than 40 schools lost their SROs. Some have brought them back, but there is still a lot of confusion over which situations they are actually allowed to do their jobs in.
Finally, I anticipate the Democrats bringing up their bill to make Minnesota a sanctuary state. Everything I've heard from constituents is extremely opposed to this bill. In other areas of the country, sanctuary cities have struggled with a huge increase in illegal immigration that strained resources like housing, food shelves, public safety, and healthcare. I have heard the bill will begin in the State and Local Government committee, which I serve on, so I will have the opportunity to make the concerns of our district heard during the debate.
There will be many more bills brought up this session, and as they move through the process I will keep you posted on what's happening in St. Paul. If you have any concerns or questions about bills that are coming before the House, please reach out.
