Legislative Update
State Flag Changes
You may have heard that this week, the commission assembled to choose the new state flag settled on a design. Unfortunately, this commission included very few voices and took little to no public input during the process.
When the bill establishing the commission was being debated, I proposed an amendment for a statewide referendum. The amendment stated:
The recommendations of the commission must be submitted to the voters at a special referendum, held simultaneously with the 2024 state general election. The question submitted must be “Shall the designs recommended by the State Emblems Redesign Commission be adopted as the official flag and the official seal of the State of Minnesota?”
The amendment was rejected by the majority party. I strongly believe that if we're going to change the state flag, all Minnesotans should have the opportunity to weigh in on the final design instead of allowing elected officials empower a small group of people to change the most public symbol of the state with little to no oversight or checks on their decision-making power.
