Partisan Elections Bill
On Friday the House majority passed the most partisan elections bill in Minnesota history. Nice sounding labors don’t change the fact that the bill contains numerous concerning provisions, without improving transparency or fixing the issues that the Legislative Auditor found and presented in 2018. While I and others have worked for a bipartisan, collaborative elections bill that would strengthen our electoral system, that was unfortunately not the outcome we got on the floor on Friday. Our colleagues on the other side of the aisle refused to take our input or adopt our amendments leading to an elections bill that passed on party lines. Partisan elections bills aren’t our Minnesota Values. I believe in strengthening our electoral system in a bipartisan, apolitical fashion.
Calendared Omnibus Bills
Who of us is increasing our spending by 40 percent? Then why are the Democrat-led House, Senate, and Governor increasing the state budget by 40 percent to $72 billion? This week and in the coming weeks, budget bills will be heard on the House Floor. It started this week with the Higher Education HF2073 and Legacy Finance HF1999 bills last Wednesday. More spending bills will be up next week. While these bills are all different there is one similarity between them – they were written and passed without input from your Republican legislators, and so far rejecting every amendment proposed to remedy concerns with these bills.
These massive omnibus bills increase government spending to unsustainable levels and contain policy that won’t be passed on their own as stand-alone bills – I will continue to be your voice for logic and reason. However, I fear that the majority will continue to ignore any effort to correct, or prevent implementation of policies that have already failed in other states.
