Legislative Update
Several bills progressed during the early part of this week, but the storm has caused a pause in the legislative process. House leadership has canceled all House business, including committee hearings and Floor sessions, through the rest of the week. The regular schedule will resume on Monday.
During this legislative pause, I would encourage members of the public to use this extra time to let me and other legislators to hear your input and concerns about how any of the bills moving through the process would impact your family and community.
For example, some of the biggest bills we have moving through committees right now are a bill creating a huge new bureaucracy to mandate new paid family and medical leave rules on nearly every business in the state, a statewide budget that would increase the cost of government by nearly 25 percent, and numerous new taxes and fees that will drive up the cost of living for every Minnesotan.
Especially at a time when we have an $18 billion budget surplus, it is unconscionable to be passing unfunded mandates on businesses, increasing the state's budget by massive amounts, and raising taxes after the surplus proved that Minnesotans are already overtaxed.
