Dear Friends,
This past week, I pushed back on legislation that would restore voting rights to dangerous felons BEFORE they’ve even completed their criminal sentence. HF28. It is wrong to restore the voice of murderers when the victims' voices are forever silenced. I voted no on this bill.
I also co-authored legislation that ensures criminal carjackers are given mandatory minimum prison sentences, and distributors of deadly fentanyl are held accountable. HF 615 and HF379.
This afternoon the Governor released his budget proposal. As a reminder, our state has a $17.6 billion surplus. While the Governor did include some tax cuts, he didn't go far enough. For example, he refused to fully eliminate the tax on social security benefits, which has received bipartisan support. Instead, the Governor's proposal grows government by 25%. When there are reports in the news everyday of waste, fraud, and abuse in our state government, growing our bureaucracy will not solve those issues.
This budget does not match the priorities of Minnesotans. I will keep fighting to return this historic surplus to taxpayers, instead of growing government.
