We started this week with a unanimous vote to pass the tax conformity bill off the House Floor. This bill will alleviate unnecessary burdens for Minnesota tax filers, and will ensure that Minnesota is not the only state in the country to still be taxing certain grants. This includes some grants given to those hardest hit by pandemic shutdowns, and I'm glad to see that the state will no longer be profiting off of money meant to help those individuals and businesses in need.
This week I was added to the Elections Finance and Policy committee, so I will now be serving on four committees. My other committees include Health Finance and Policy, Human Services Finance, and the Property Tax Division, which I serve on as the Republican Lead member.
I've chief authored two bills that were introduced this week. HF167 would give taxpayers a thousand dollar refund on their 2021 income taxes, and a thousand dollar tax credit for their 2022 taxes. When the state has a historic, $17.6 billion surplus, it seems clear that the government is collecting far too much in taxes from Minnesotans. This bill will help out Minnesotans who are feeling the pain of rising cost of living and high taxes.
My other bill, HF115, addresses the fact that many local governments have had to borrow funds to quickly repair and rebuild roads or bridges after a storm or flood. This bill would take some of the surplus and use it for a reserve fund to facilitate the quick construction or repair of the roads and bridges needed for emergency vehicles and to help our our communities continue to function.
