Legislative Update from Rep. Patti Anderson

Dear Friends,

It is an honor to represent my neighbors in District 33A. On Tuesday I took the oath of office at the start of the 2023 legislative session. I look forward to serving you over the next two years, and I look forward to hearing from you often. I plan to send regular updates throughout session to provide you with the latest information on what is going on at the Capitol. 

This session, I will serve on the Education Finance and Taxes Committees. As a small business owner and former State Auditor, I know that Minnesota has a lot of work to do to make our state more friendly to families and job creators. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Taxes Committee to return Minnesota’s historic $17.6 billion surplus to our families and Main Street businesses in the form of permanent, meaningful tax cuts.

The Taxes Committee passed H.F. 31 this week. This bill would provide federal tax conformity for Minnesotans. Tax conformity is critical for ensuring that any credits, deductions, or exemptions that families and businesses are eligible for when filing their federal taxes are not nullified when filing their state taxes. We need to pass this bill quickly so there is no delay with Minnesota filing deadlines. H.F. 31 will now move to the Ways and Means Committee.

I also signed onto a bill, which will drop next week, that will completely eliminate the tax on Social Security. Minnesota is one of only eleven states to tax Social Security. This legislation has bipartisan support and I am hopeful we can finally eliminate this tax.
