9/11 Remembrance - 20 year Anniversary
Here is my story from September 11, 2001. I was on a plane to Washington, DC that was rerouted and landed in Chicago.
The tragedy on that day was unimaginable but sadly the unification of our country in the aftermath also seems like something we may never see again. Neighbor looked out for neighbor. Strangers thanked police, firefighters, and anyone looking to lend a hand. We’ve seen challenges across our country and right here in Minnesota in the recent years that have not spurred nearly the goodwill we saw in the wake of 9/11.
Take some time today to pray for the families of the victims of that day, pray for the first responders, and pray for our nation to one day be able to come together as one like we did in the aftermath of that awful day 20 years ago.
The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, the 9/11 Global War on Terrorism Task Force, and the Minnesota Military Museum will mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 this September with an event on the Minnesota State Capitol grounds. The official “9/11 Day of Remembrance” is scheduled in-person for Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021. In addition to memorializing the events of that day and honoring those impacted, this event is focused on bringing the community together through a message of hope, unity and resilience.
The event will feature moments of silence and tolling of local church bells in remembrance of the airplane attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a reading of names of Minnesotans killed that day and during the Global War on Terrorism, and a commemorative ceremony including aircraft flyovers, guest speakers, musical performances, and military honors. Speakers will include retired Army Gen. Joseph Votel, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Tina Smith, Rep. Betty McCollum, MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke, Gold Star Mother Jill Stephenson and Mariah Jacobsen, daughter of Flight 93 hero Tom Burnett. See full details here.
You may be hearing church bells ringing this Saturday, September 11th. As part of the state's official commemoration of the 20th year since 9/11, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is inviting congregations to ring their church bells in coordination with the Liberty Bell and a bell on the steps of the State Capital that day at each of the four times a plane went down.
