Anti-Law Enforcement Public Safety Bill
This week, the House passed SF 970, the Public Safety and Judiciary Omnibus bill. This bill includes provisions to divert violent criminals from prison time, hides some offenders' sentences even from their victims, and would allow governing bodies to put activists in charge of law enforcement agencies in the form of citizen oversight councils, which could have very broad powers over law enforcement agencies and their officers.
One good thing about the bill is it does include incredibly important changes to the criminal sexual conduct statute which were brought into sharp focus by a recent Minnesota Supreme Court decision about mental incapacitation.
I spoke against the House Democrat Public Safety bill that not only is anti-law enforcement but also doesn't do nearly enough to protect young victims from sexual predators. Minnesota's laws are some of the weakest in the country and must be reformed. I could not even get a hearing on my bills to do that this year. It was truly disappointing.
I am glad the Republican Senate will make sure these extreme proposals designed by the radical left to hurt our law enforcement community will not become law.

Raising Taxes with a $4 Billion Surplus
Also this week, House Democrats passed their Taxes Omnibus bill that raises taxes by more than $1 billion and faced bipartisan opposition with every single Republican voting no.
With a $4 billion surplus money flowing in from the federal government, we are in a position to help all Minnesotans who have struggled during this pandemic. Instead, House Democrats are needlessly raising taxes and refusing to eliminate state taxation on forgiven Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, moves that will continue to hurt our state’s job creators.
It also creates a new income tax rate and would give Minnesota the 2nd highest income tax rate in the country. This will simply cause people, job creators, and small businesses to leave our state. We are not on an island, people and businesses can and are leaving Minnesota to more friendly climates.
These ideas will hurt our recovery out of the painful last year caused by the shutdowns of Governor Walz.
Once again, thanks to the Republican Senate, this bill has no chance of becoming law but just goes to show the misplaced priorities of the Democrat House Majority.
