Johnson Statement on Maxine Waters Visit to Brooklyn Center
St. Paul - House GOP Public Safety Committee Lead Representative Brian Johnson, R-Cambridge, released the following statement regarding inflammatory statements urging Brooklyn Center protesters to "get more confrontational" and "make sure that they know that we mean business". This came after days of clashes between protesters and law enforcement, where numerous projectiles were thrown at officers.
"It is disappointing that Congresswoman Waters refuses to recognize that the United States Constitution protects the rights of anyone accused of a crime, and ensures a fair trial," said Johnson. "I also call on Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to look into charging Congresswoman Waters for attempting to incite a riot. Now is the time for cooler heads and for Minnesotans to make their voices heard peacefully — not for division and inciting more violence."
The Minnesota Senate passed a resolution Monday on a 42-23 vote. During the debate, Democrats forcefully defended Waters despite her inflammatory rhetoric.
