Legislative Update
During Monday’s House session, we voted to end the governor’s emergency powers for the twelfth time. Once again, Democrats voted against it, and the motion failed on a vote of 70-63. On Thursday, we voted to allow dentists to give COVID-19 vaccinations, which will help more vaccines get out to those who need them and help us get back to normal sooner.
Today, Minnesota Management and Budget releases their February forecast, which will give us the lay of the land as we hammer out our next biennial budget. Our last forecast revealed a smaller but still significant deficit, but we are hoping to see the deficit shrink even more.
We can see that our economy is beginning to recover, but we still have a long way to go before most of our businesses are back on stable footing. Our local businesses and family budgets are still feeling the impact from the pandemic and shutdowns over last year, and now is not the time to raise taxes across all income levels like the governor has proposed. As we build our budget, I will continue to advocate for fiscally responsible solutions to the needs of our state.
