Legislative Update
HF 4556
On Tuesday, the House and Senate met in session to approve legislation to help Minnesotans better respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some highlights of the bill include helping struggling farmers by extending dates for farmer/lender mediation, expanding telemedicine, allowing public officials to participate in remote meetings or hearings, and allowing marriage license applications to be submitted remotely. It also ensures Commercial Drivers Licenses and out-of-state licenses will continue to be valid while in-person appointments are restricted.
The bill also includes $1.25 million for Second Harvest Heartland, which will provide critical funding for our local food shelves and ensure they can purchase milk and other protein products from our state's farmers.
Insulin Affordability Act
After several months of work, the legislature came to a compromise agreement that makes insulin more affordable for Minnesotans and ensures that insulin is available to Minnesotans in emergency situations. With this bill, people will receive life-saving assistance if they cannot afford their insulin.
Implementing Unemployment Insurance Extension
The Department of Employment and Economic Development continues to implement the federal CARES Act, and has now fully implemented the additional 13 weeks of Unemployment Insurance (UI) passed at the federal level. If you are near the end of your benefits, all you need to do is log in to Minnesota's UI system and indicate that you remain unemployed.
