Dear Neighbors,
With our legislative work required to be wrapped up by May 18, we’ve got about a month left to deliver for Minnesotans. I’ve been here long enough to know that a lot can get done in these remaining weeks, but that’ll be easier said than done if Republicans continue to play political games.
There are immediate things that require our attention before we leave in May. We simply can’t afford to kick the can down the road when it comes to delivering a lifeline to HCMC and providing support to those impacted by Operation Metro Surge. DFLers have ready-to-go solutions for both of these, it’s just a matter of whether Republicans will join us.
The same can be said for other crucial issues before the legislature this year. All session, we’ve been talking about the need to make life more affordable for Minnesotans, to make our schools and communities safe from gun violence, and to take action against fraudsters stealing public dollars. DFLers are ready to pass bills on all counts.
Instead, Republicans would rather focus on time-wasting political stunts like trying to impeach Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that their proposals went nowhere this week, but it was a waste of valuable time. They could’ve spent this time working on solutions to make life more affordable, and our communities more safe. Instead Republicans are letting their most radical members drive their legislative agenda.
Another example from this week - my DFL colleagues brought forward a good-faith proposal to fight fraud in Minnesota’s Medicaid program. The proposal would beef up one of the most effective Medicaid fraud fighting forces in the country. That means more fraudsters in jail and more public funds going where they need to, all with a 3-to-1 match of federal dollars. Republicans blocked this proposal.
If we’re going to deliver results for Minnesotans this year, it’s time Republicans started taking this work seriously.
