Dear Neighbors,
Today marks a sort of “halfway point” for our work in the Minnesota Legislature. Next week there will be no committee hearings or floor sessions in recognition of the Easter and Passover break, and when we return on April 7 we’ll be prepared for the second half of the 2026 Legislative Session.
With time running out, my DFL colleagues and I were able to force a vote on several key pieces of legislation - all of them focused on making our communities safer. Minnesotans deserve to know where Republicans stand.
The first was meant to be an incredibly low bar: requiring federal agents to get a judicial warrant in order to enter a Minnesota school. This was the norm before the second Trump administration.
Time and again, we saw ICE and federal agents terrorize our communities, including the areas in and around our schools. Our students deserve the peace of mind that their school is a safe space.

Even some of our Republican colleagues know ICE went too far, but instead of using their power to do something about it, they think a “strongly-worded letter” is enough. Our kids deserve more than that.
The other bills took on gun violence prevention measures, banning high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. It’s important to note that the votes we held required only one Republican to join us in order to move these bills forward.
None of them did.
Despite the vast majority of Minnesotans supporting these measures, House Republicans decided to side with President Trump and the gun lobby over their own constituents.
Child Tax Credit Reminder
If you’re still working on your 2025 taxes and have children, please don’t forget about the Child Tax Credit! It is NOT automatic. So far this year, more than 154,000 tax returns have claimed the Child Tax Credit, benefiting over 318,000 children across Minnesota. Families are receiving an average credit of $2,669.

The credit is estimated to reduce child poverty by up to a third in Minnesota, making it one of the most impactful investments DFLers protected amid federal cuts. Learn more about eligibility here.
