Neighbors,
We start our legislative week with the devastating news from Burnsville and mourn with the families and loved ones of the fallen heroes. We are so appreciative of all brave first responders who serve in dangerous circumstances and are deeply saddened when any are lost in the line of duty. The Andover and Coon Rapids communities share Burnsville’s sorrow and support our Burnsville neighbors while they grieve and heal.
This week in the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, which I chair, we heard several bills. Among the measures is a proposal to create a bonus program to provide payments to members who refer someone who enlists or is commissioned into the Minnesota National Guard. You can watch the testimony and read about the bill here.
I also serve on these committees:
The PACT Act is a new law expanding VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances. This law helps the VA provide generations of Veterans and their survivors with the care and benefits they have earned and deserve. You can learn more about the PACT Act and how to file a claim, by clicking here.
The Veterans Crisis Line's number helps make it easier to access help in times of need. Veterans can use this option by dialing 988 and pressing 1 to contact the Veterans Crisis Line. Veterans may still reach the Veterans Crisis Line with the previous phone number—1-800-273-8255 and Press 1—by text (838255), and through chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat.
Democrats are dedicated to reducing the cost of health care and protecting against price-gouging. Earlier this month, Attorney General Keith Ellison announced a landmark settlement with the Eli Lily insulin company capping insulin at just $35 for the next 5 years.
Drug companies raised the price of insulin by over 1,100% between 1990 and 2020, and this settlement ensures Minnesotans can afford their lives and live with dignity, safety, and respect.
You can learn more about the settlement and how to get insulin for just $35 a month here: https://www.ag.state.mn.us/MNinsulin35/.
Last week we honored Murdered and Missing Indigenous Relatives Day of Remembrance. I encourage you to check out the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office, a first-in-the-nation office we established in 2021.
Now available: MMIR specialty license plates. Fees paid by drivers who obtain a plate will be put into the Gaagige-Mikwendaagoziwag reward fund. To order license plates online or find an office to purchase them in-person, visit drive.mn.gov.
