Neighbors,
Just a reminder if you have experienced storm damage in recent weeks, it is important to know where to turn for help. The Minnesota Department of Commerce has a Disaster Response Guide to help walk you through next steps.
I recently visited a nonprofit called Every Third Saturday. ETS assists veterans to find new purpose after military service. We included funding for this important program in our Veterans’ budget bill this session.
The same day, I was also joined by several of my Capitol colleagues at the Minneapolis Veterans Home to discuss legislation impacting veterans which passed in the 2023 session.
This is an exciting time as students and teachers head back to the classroom. There are several new impacts to expect for the new school year:
- Free breakfast and lunch for all student saving families hundreds of dollars annually.
- Better access to mental health services by helping districts hire more school counselors, psychologists, nurses, and social workers.
- Record funding for local school districts to ease reliance on property taxes as a funding source.
- $41 million in additional state funding for Anoka Hennepin schools.
- More prekindergarten opportunities to help our youngest learners get a great start in life.
I wish a successful school year to all students, families, and teachers!
On Aug. 1, local nursing homes across the state received a significant amount of new state funding as part of a bipartisan agreement to stabilize a sector of the economy facing financial hardship.
Nursing home residents deserve to be supported, as do the hard-working staff who care for them. I was pleased to vote ‘yes’ for investments to benefit both the residents and workers, and now the first round of funding has been released to nursing homes across the state who have been hit hard financially the last few years.
Of these initial investments, $311,417 was delivered on August 1 to Park River States Care Center in Coon Rapids. In addition, the same amount will be delivered to the facility on August 1, 2024.
During the legislative interim, you can still stay in touch with State Capitol activities by going to the Minnesota House of Representatives Public Information Services website.
I value hearing from you, so please don’t hesitate to call or email me any time. You can find my information on my House website. Also, make sure to ‘like’ my Facebook page.
It is an honor to represent you at the State Capitol.
Sincerely,
Jerry Newton
State Representative
