Transit reroutes during reconstruction

The closure of Minnehaha Avenue means that Metro Transit buses will be rerouted. During the first phase of construction -- from April through approximately August 2015 -- the 7 and 9 routes will not run on Minnehaha between 42nd and 46th streets.

Instead, they will be rerouted along 42nd Street to Hiawatha Avenue, then on Hiawatha Avenue to the 46th Street LRT station. While this detour is in effect there are no planned stops between 42nd and 46th streets. Detours will change this summer as the construction and road closures move north along Minnehaha.

Check for the latest information and updates at the Metro Transit website.

Green yard and rain garden workshops

Rain Garden

Learn about simple changes you can make in the way you take care of your yard that will provide wildlife habitat and help keep our lakes, rivers and streams clean at an upcoming Metro Blooms rain gardens workshop.

Workshops cover pollinator-friendly yard-care practices and the basics of rain gardens and shoreline plantings, and include one-on-one design assistance from landscape professionals and master gardeners.

A local workshop is scheduled at the Nokomis Park Recreation Center on April 25 at 1 p.m. Others are scheduled through June in Bloomington, Champlin, Edina, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, Plymouth and St. Louis Park.  Click here to register.

Master planning for area parks underway

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is currently developing its South Service Area Master Plan, which covers all 33 parks in the area east of I-35W and south and west of the Mississippi River. This effort kicked off at the beginning of the year and continues through the fall.

One function of the master plan is to guide what the city's parks will look like in the future, setting the vision for improved services, programs, and facilities throughout the park system. The plan will consider the system's current assets and expected changes in demographics and park usage.

The park board has created a community advisory committee and will hold meetings in the coming months to help guide this project. Keep informed and find out about upcoming meetings through the project's web page.

Minneapolis plans reconstruction of 38th Street

The City of Minneapolis is planning a total reconstruction of 38th Street between Minnehaha and Hiawatha for 2016. The city has posted its preferred layout for that segment on its project website.

The new roadway is proposed to include a variety of treatments to make it friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists, including on-street bike lanes, street lighting, and wide grassy boulevards between the sidewalk and road.

The reconstruction of 38th Street was identified as a priority project in the Minnehaha-Hiawatha Community Works Investment Framework because of its lack of lighting, poor pedestrian and bike facilities, and development potential from its close proximity to the LRT Blue line.  Click here for more details on the city project.
