The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to use extra caution at the start of the school year. Parents are reminded to review safety tips with their children.
Anyone behind the wheel should drive attentively and watch for children on sidewalks, along roadways, and at all crosswalks and intersections.
Motorists:
* Reduce speeds in and around school zones.
* You might consider changing your route in order to avoid school bus traffic.
* Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, and curbs.
* Be prepared to stop for the school bus.
* Enter and exit driveways, parking lots, and alleys slowly and carefully.
* Do not engage in distracted driving. Put down the phone and focus on driving.
 On August 28, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Counterterrorism Center concluded a two-day workshop on the prevention and response to terrorism and mass casualty incidents.
The Joint Counter Terrorism Awareness Workshop Series (JCTAWS) brought together hundreds of partners in the public and private sector to discuss potential threats to communities. The Twin Cities metro area was one of fourteen locations nationwide to receive the training.
“The training has improved the way we work together and it provided an opportunity for the law enforcement community to update our plans for a regional approach to emergency preparedness,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.
More than two dozen agencies were represented, including the police departments from the following communities; Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Edina, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minneapolis, Plymouth, Richfield, and St. Paul.
 Sheriff Stanek visited the Minnesota State Fair. The Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge are talking to parents and teens about ways to prevent teen use of drugs and alcohol. Sheriff Stanek also visited WCCO Radio to remind people to wear life jackets while enjoying the water during this heat wave.
 Thank you to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Forensic Sciences Division! August 11-17, 2013, was proclaimed Forensic Science Week in Minnesota. At HCSO, the Sheriff's Crime Lab provides forensic services to all local law enforcement agencies as well as state and federal agencies. We operate a state-of-the-art lab that has earned international accreditation. Last year, the division handled more than 7,300 requests for services - including Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators who gather evidence at crime scenes across Hennepin County.
