Nation Night Out used to Highlight Gun Violence Prevention

Despite the threatening weather, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and about 150 staff participated in this year’s National Night Out on August 6th, sharing messages about gun violence prevention, which is a high priority for the office and Mike Freeman personally.

In addition to our work in the courtroom, the office looks for other ways to prevent gun violence. Providing gun locks is an inexpensive way to prevent people, especially children, from accidentally shooting themselves or others.

As part of this commitment to gun violence prevention, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, distributed hundreds of gun locks and gun safety brochures in various Hennepin County locations. Information on identity theft, livability crimes and nuisance property were also provided to residents.

Read more about how we spent National Night Out and why this event is important to our office. Thank you to everyone who invited us to their neighborhood events, we hope to see you again next year.

lock it up

“Every responsible gun owner knows that when they are not carrying their firearm, it should be locked and stored. Gun locks are a good way, when a gun is not in a gun locker, to protect public safety and particularly children.”

- Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman

Dealing with Problem Properties

Problem properties can undermine public safety and your quality of life. The nuisance law is a tool prosecutors and community members can use to build and maintain healthy neighborhoods.

Mike Freeman explains the law and the steps that the Hennepin County Attorney's Office can take to resolve these issues.
