Beginning to build the vision

Elected officials and project supporters braved the heat as a standing room only crowd gathered at the July 9 Interchange groundbreaking ceremony.
“This is another landmark day in the creation of the Twin Cities transit system for the 21st Century,” Hennepin County Commissioner and Regional Railroad Authority Chair Peter McLaughlin said. “The Interchange will be the busiest rail transit hub in Minnesota.”
Utility work began on-site (not affecting the neighborhood) this morning, and in the following weeks residents can expect to see the beginning of site clearing and other related activities. The Environmental Services Building is tentatively scheduled for demolition in late July or early August.
“The Interchange will be a signature piece of public infrastructure,” Hennepin County Board Chair Mike Opat said.
Other speakers at the groundbreaking included:
  • U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar
  • U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison
  • Senate Majority Leader Dave Senjem
  • Metro Transit General Manager Brian Lamb
  • Minnesota Ballpark Authority Chair Steve Cramer
  • Minneapolis City Council President Barb Johnson
  • Knutson Construction Senior Vice President Darin Knapp
  • Peter Cavaluzzi, FAIA, Principal at EE&K a Perkins Eastman Company
Once construction is completed in 2014, the Interchange will be a bustling urban park, transit station and neighborhood gathering space.
