The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) wants to help you stay informed about changes to Medicaid (called Medical Assistance in Minnesota). These changes come from a new federal law, and some of them may affect you and your family.
DHS has created a new webpage with the most current and accurate information on what the Medicaid changes are, who is affected, and when the changes start. You can find it at mn.gov/dhs/federalchanges/. DHS will keep adding more details in the coming weeks and months as they learn more from the federal government.
What are the changes?
- Starting October 1, 2026:
-
Noncitizen adults: Some noncitizen adults age 21 or older who are not pregnant will no longer be eligible for Medicaid (Medical Assistance).
- Starting January 1, 2027:
-
Work requirements: Some adults will need to meet work requirements to qualify for Medicaid (Medical Assistance).
-
Six-month renewal: Some adults will need to renew their Medicaid (Medical Assistance) coverage every six months instead of once a year.
- Starting January 1, 2028:
-
Retroactive coverage: Limits on Medicaid (Medical Assistance) retroactive coverage will begin. Federal rules will reduce how far back Medical Assistance can pay for covered medical bills before a person applies for coverage.
