Back to School: Learn about the School to Housing Program
As students head back to school, a stable place to live can make an enormous difference in their ability to learn, attend consistently, and feel secure.
Limited income-based housing vouchers and rental assistance are available to families in suburban Hennepin County school districts.
If you or a student you know is staying in temporary housing — like a hotel or with family or friends — School to Housing can help provide stability for the new school year.
Families with students in pre‑K through 12th grade can apply for vouchers, rental assistance, housing search support, and one‑on‑one help to achieve long-term stable housing.
Note: Families with elementary-aged children in Minneapolis Public Schools may be eligible for Minneapolis-based housing support. Contact your school social worker to learn more.

In the last Administration, Operations and Budget Committee meeting, we received an update on Hennepin County's financial outlook. Through July, county spending remains below budget. At the same time, federal and state policy changes are creating significant pressures as we prepare for 2027.
Staff estimate that new costs and lost revenues will create a $27.7 million property-tax impact in 2027, rising to $51 million in 2028 before inflation. These shifts affect services resident rely on, including SNAP and Medicaid administration, long-term supports and services, and MNChoices. The county has also lost $3.3 million from previously awarded federal grants.
The county is responding by managing hiring, reviewing contracts and capital projects, and looking carefully for responsible savings. Our job is to protect essential services while being honest about what residents can afford and where the county must find efficiencies.

In Memoriam: Representative Karen Clark
With love and deep gratitude, I offered a remembrance honoring the life and legacy of former Minnesota State Representative Karen Clark who passed away on Tuesday, June 30. Karen was truly a trailblazer, unwavering advocate and extraordinary public servant who devoted nearly four decades to the people of South Minneapolis and Hennepin County.

In public health, environment, jobs - Karen’s impact is felt everywhere. Join us in celebrating the life and power of Karen Clark, taking place September 18. RSVP here to gather for her: https://www.eventbrite.com/.../karen-clark-memorial...
Commendation: Former Hennepin County Commissioner John Derus
Last month, the county board offered posthumous commendation for former Hennepin County Commissioner John Derus, who recently passed away.
Commissioner Derus recently passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy that can still be seen throughout Hennepin County. He served on the County Board for 18 years, from 1975 to 1993, including many years as Board Chair.
Commissioner Derus was an early and tireless advocate for the development of Light Rail Transit, laying essential groundwork for the regional transit system that serves as a vital connector for communities today.
John's legacy lives on through the infrastructure he helped create, the institutions he strengthened, and the countless lives he positively influenced.
Overdose Awareness Month & Recovery Month
the Lowry Bridge was lit purple on August 31st in observance of Overdose Awareness Day
On August 18, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners formally proclaimed August 31 as Overdose Awareness Day and September as Recovery Month. The observances highlight our shared commitment to preventing overdoses, supporting treatment and recovery, and honoring the strength of community members whose lives have been affected by substance use disorder.
International Overdose Awareness Day has been recognized for 25 years as a time to remember those we’ve lost and to take meaningful action to save lives. Recovery Month, observed nationally since 1989, celebrates the resilience of people in recovery and the service providers, families and communities who make recovery possible in all its forms.
In 2025, more than 2,100 Hennepin County residents were treated in hospitals for non-fatal overdoses, and 246 lives were lost due to overdoses involving opioids. Substance use disorder affects people of every age, race, gender and background—and disproportionately impacts American Indian and African American residents. Expanding access to treatment and recovery services aligns with the county’s 2020 declaration of racism as a public health crisis and reinforces our commitment to building a safer, healthier community.
Most opioid overdoses today involve fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 100 times more potent than morphine. Hennepin County is addressing the opioid crisis by connecting people to treatment, supporting long‑term recovery, and expanding access to naloxone (Narcan).
Naloxone gives people another chance to seek treatment, continue their recovery journey, and stay connected to the people they love.

District 4 gallery wall
sProud to unveil a new gallery wall at the District 4 - "the People's Office".

A special thank you to Travis Stockdale, Hennepin County Facility Services staff, for helping us hang the art and thoughtfully figure out where each piece belonged.
This wall is more than a collection of artwork - it is a reflection of our district, its stories, and its enduring spirit.
We resist. We document. We preserve.

Where: Hennepin History Museum; 2303 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis MN 55404
Hours: Thursdays & Fridays 10am - 3pm; Saturdays 10am - 5pm
Hennepin History Museum is partnering with the Minnesota Latino Museum to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the first large-scale Mexican musical performance in our state.
Opened August 20, the exhibition examines the National Mexican Band’s appearance at the 1886 Minneapolis Exposition. "The Mexican Band of 1886” e explores the untold history of the 56-member military band from Mexico, arriving to Minneapolis in 1886, performing for 41 days at the inaugural Minneapolis Industrial Exposition.
With an audience size of at least 300,000 people over the 40+ days of performances, this was one of the largest live music events in Minnesota state history. And yet, by the early twentieth century, the band had passed on from memory, and slowly faded from the historical record.

 When: September 5–27, 2026

Set in the aftermath of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church, Nina Simone: Four Women imagines the experiences that shaped Simone’s protest anthem “Mississippi Goddam.” Through live music, movement, and charged conversation, the play explores how art can give voice to a movement.
“Things are going too slowly—you might even say things are going backwards,” says director Faye M. Price. “This is a perfect time to examine civil rights in this country, our relationship to our government, and what we seem to be fighting for. Nina decided to do something about it. Music was her weapon.”

Where: Van Cleve Park; 901 15th Avenue SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414
Formerly known as the Como Cookout
The Como Cookout has always been about more than just the cookout—it has been about bringing neighbors together and celebrating everything that makes the Como neighborhood special.
This year, a change in University funding has limited our ability to continue providing the complimentary food that has traditionally been available past Cookouts. Rather than scale back the event, we saw an opportunity to broaden it. EXPLORE COMO! A Neighborhood Celebration better reflects what the event has become: a celebration of the neighborhood, its residents, families, community organizations, and businesses.
While the name is changing, the heart of the event remains the same. EXPLORE COMO! is still about gathering together, connecting with one another, and celebrating the fantastic Como neighborhood we call home.

The full story on Minnesota's new Raise the Age law
At just 10 years old, Trystan was arrested, charged with five felony counts, and held in juvenile detention for 48 hours following a behavioral outburst at school related to his severe autism. The experience profoundly changed his life, leaving lasting trauma that still affects him years later.
In this documentary, Trystan's mother, Tamara, shares their family's story—one of fear, resilience, and ultimately hope. Alongside her story, Hennepin County Attorney's Office Children and Families Division Director Sarah Davis explains the developmental science behind Minnesota's decision to raise the minimum age for delinquency from 10 to 13.
