2025 Countywide Awards Celebration
Last month, Hennepin County celebrated our employees during our annual Countywide Awards celebration. This year's theme was, "You Make Us Better," reflecting the commitment, creativity, and service that strengthen our organization and the people we serve.
This event gives us a chance to recognize the extraordinary employees across departments and roles who push boundaries, spark new ideas, and support residents with compassion and excellence. The individuals and teams we honored do not just meet expectations; they elevate them.
This year we recognized 6 teams and 5 individuals who were nominated for and received awards for their work in 2025.

I had the privilege of presenting the People First Award to a team that exemplifies our commitment to serving residents. This year’s People First Award recipient is the Office of Multi-Cultural Services, accepted by Jillian Kyles on behalf of the team.
Staff within the Office of Multi-Cultural Services quickly pivoted and responded to individuals "homebound" due to the occupation during Operation Metro Surge. When residents faced barriers to essential services, the Office of Multi-Cultural Services responded with courage and innovation, ensuring residents retained access to food, benefits, and critical information without compromising their safety or dignity. They collaborated with internal programs and external partners such as Social Security, unemployment services, refugee support, and community organizations to extend capacity during a critical time. Staff spent countless hours identifying resources and delivering essentials to individuals who were "homebound".
Their approach reflects People First in action: prioritizing human needs, honoring language and culture, and collaborating for comprehensive support. Their work exemplifies the equity, trust, and resilience that define Hennepin County’s commitment to its residents.

Innovation in Actions: Flavors of Health

At Hennepin Healthcare's Redleaf Center for Family Healing, participants gather not just to cook but also for community, connection and confidence-building.
Flavors of Health, a two-part program designed for Hennepin Health members (those enrolled in the county’s health insurance plan) managing diabetes, congestive heart failure, or navigating pregnancy and postpartum.
Members begin with an interactive, community-focused cooking class offered at Redleaf Center or NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, where they learn how to prepare meals that support their health, taste good, and honor their cultural identities.
"Food is medicine, but it’s also deeply personal," said Vanessa Bembridge, who helped develop the program. "When you combine culturally meaningful foods with the skills to prepare them, people feel empowered before they even get the groceries."
HCAO - Victim Services

Celebrating Pride Month
The Lowry Avenue Bridge was illuminated with rainbow colors in recognition of the festival on June 27th & 28th.
For the first time, Hennepin County will proudly participate in the Twin Cities Pride Parade.
Recognition of Success Ceremony
On Tuesday, June 2nd, we held our annual Recognition of Success graduation ceremony at the McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis.
We celebrated the success of 79 young people who graduated or earned their GED while receiving county services in Foster Care, TeenHope, or the juvenile justice system.
This ceremony is an opportunity to lift up the contributions they have made, and will continue to make, to our community.
It’s also an opportunity to shift the narrative about these young people, away from the obstacles they’ve faced, toward their strengths, hard work, and richly deserved success.
250th Anniversary Celebrations
Hennepin County is joining the nation in recognizing 250 years since the Declaration of Independence. To honor this anniversary, we’re creating and supporting programs that highlight the state, local, and Indigenous histories. This shared history has shaped our land, communities, government, and culture.
Learn how we're celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States: https://www.hennepincounty.gov/.../coun.../250th-anniversary

The Lowry Avenue Bridge was lit red, white, and blue in honor of Independence Day.
Governor's Workplace Safety Award
June was National Safety Month and we’re reminded of key safety topics that affect us all:

- Staying safe on the roads
- Supporting overall worker health, and;
- Preventing slips, trips, and falls
Hennepin County is proud to be recognized at the 2026 Minnesota Safety and Health Conference with the Governor’s Workplace Safety Award.
We earned the Gold Achievement Award for our strong performance in preventing workplace injuries in 2025, including an incidence rate better than the 75th percentile of both state and national averages.
This achievement reflects our employees’ commitment to working safely each day and the People First and Stewardship core values. Our employees are the county’s greatest asset, and protecting their well-being strengthens our ability to serve residents effectively.
Celebrating Juneteenth

Public Health Leadership Academy (PHLA)
I am so grateful to have been selected alongside Assistant County Administrator Sara Hollie to participate in the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) Public Health Leadership Academy, representing Hennepin County as a team! In June, we traveled to Washington, D.C. for our in-person cohort training, where we had the opportunity to share Hennepin County’s leadership in public health initiatives in the state and region while also learning from other County Commissioners and Administrators from across the country.
This experience has provided dedicated time and space for ACA Hollie and I to further explore our shared interest in supporting healthy aging in Hennepin County. We are grateful for the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from others, and bring new insights to our work.
District Day - Howe Neighborhood
Last month, the District 4 office stopped by businesses in the Howe (& edge of Longfellow) neighborhood. It’s always a highlight for our office to spend time learning more about and supporting local gems across neighborhoods in D4.
First stop was to grab a quick drink at Fireroast Coffee.
While in route to our next location, we passed by Moon Dog Landscaping and Design,a local company specializing in sustainable and creative landscape design with a focus on using local materials and avoiding pesticides.
Our last stop was at Mother Earth Gardens, which was recently featured in our Elevate Hennepin April newsletter.
When Karen O’Connor, co-owner of Mother Earth Gardens, joined CEO Next, she wasn’t chasing more locations or a bigger revenue, she was thinking about the legacy of her business.
See how she identified the next steps for her successful business and reignited her entrepreneurial spirit in CEO Next, a cohort from Elevate Hennepin.

A Snapshot of Hennepin County Libraries 2025 Annual Report
Let's talk libraries! Hennepin County Libraries 2025 Annual Report shows just how deeply our libraries continue to serve residents across the county. In 2025, patrons borrowed 12.8 million items, made 4.9 million library visits, attended 10,800 programs, and gave the library system a 97% satisfaction rating. It's hard to find anything these days with that kind of approval rating! In addition, active cardholders grew to 582,000, a 9% increase from the previous year.
The report highlights the library's role far beyond books. Hennepin County Libraries provided 8,340 homework tutoring sessions, 4,173 reading tutoring sessions, more than 10 million Wi-Fi sessions, and nearly 933,000 public computer sessions. Summer learning reaching more than 14,500 youth and families, with nearly 10,000 free books distributed through support from Friends of the Hennepin County Library.
Libraries also continued to serve as practical community infrastructure. Staff and partners connected residents with reentry resources, employment help, early learning support, meeting spaces, technology access, and programs for every age group. The report also notes major planning and renovation work, including projects at Augsburg Park, Northeast, Southdale, and Westonka libraries, plus a facilities master plan to guide the next 10 to 20 years.
It is clear that the Hennepin County libraries are one of the county's most-used public investments, helping residents learn, connect, access services, and feel welcome in a shared public space.

Caribbean Carnival is not just celebration. It is liberation, a voice of freedom, and a cultural movement born from defiance, transformed into a global street parade of color, memory, music, and joy.
Carnival: They Can't Steal Our Joy follows Canadian-Ugandan filmmaker Ian Mark Kimanje as he explores why Caribbean Carnival continues to carry such deep emotional, cultural, and historical meaning across generations of African and Caribbean diasporic communities. Filmed across five countries, the documentary reveals Carnival as a living expression of resistance, survival, migration, creativity, and collective joy. Through intimate personal stories, historical reflection, and vibrant access to Carnival communities, the film reframes Carnival as more than spectacle: it is a cultural force rooted in memory, freedom, and the refusal to surrender joy.

Renter Support Fund The Powderhorn Art Fair is in continued partnership with the Renter Support Fund (RSF), a key program of Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA), the host organization of this community-centered art festival. In response to increased rates of eviction after Operation Metro Surge, the RSF aims to fundraise $750,000 leading up to the 35th Annual Powderhorn Art Fair in efforts to maintain its expanded grant program of 60 monthly grants at $1,200 per individual. By combining our event and advocacy efforts, PPNA aims to center community wellbeing through collective action and radical love.
The fund seeks to provide relief to cost-burdened Minneapolis renters through low-barrier cash assistance. This program has been a vital resource for many Minneapolis renters facing housing insecurity. By combining our event and advocacy efforts, PPNA aims to center community wellbeing through collective action and radical love.

Buses replacing METRO Blue Line trains this Summer
Metro Transit has shared that buses will replace trains for the entire Blue Line between Mall of America and Target Field stations from June 29-Aug. 19 to allow for construction and repair work.
Replacement bus timing can vary and trips will take longer because of routing and traffic conditions. Metro Transit recommends planning extra time for your trip.
The METRO D Line is another alternative for service between the Mall of America and downtown Minneapolis.
