International Compost Awareness Week is coming up May 3 to 9 with the theme “feed the soil that feeds us” to raise awareness about the important role that composting food scraps plays in improving the soil that grows our food.
Food scraps and other organic materials you compost at home or in organics recycling programs are broken down by bacteria to create nutrient-rich compost. Compost is used in gardens, at farms, and in landscaping projects to add nutrients to the soil.
Get started putting your food scraps and other compostable materials to better use. Learn about organics recycling programs or register for a free backyard composting workshop.
With assistance from a Community Zero Waste Grant, Free Geek Twin Cities began accepting donations of computers and electronics at mobile collection events, helping reduce transportation and other access barriers for residents. They continue to accept and resell items at their store in south Minneapolis.
Over 3,350 pounds of electronics were collected at the first mobile collection event on April 18 at Pershing Park in Minneapolis. Free Geek focuses on refurbishing and reusing as many of the collected items as possible. When reuse isn’t feasible, e-waste items are properly recycled.
The next tech drive is Saturday, May 2 at Linden Hills Park in Minneapolis, and more tech drives are being planned in neighborhoods and cities throughout the county.

Gravel-bed nursery helps county replant trees lost to emerald ash borer
Hennepin County forestry supervisor, Dustin Ellis, gave Fox9 a tour of the county’s gravel-bed tree nursery on Earth Day. The nursery gives the county access to hardy, diverse and cost-effective trees for use on county projects and properties. Many of the trees are planted to replace ash trees that have been removed due to emerald ash borer infestation, and Dustin offers advice to residents on what to do with ash trees on their property.
