Changes to your health benefits in 2026: What you need to know

As of Jan. 1, 2026, there are a few changes to your Hennepin Health benefits. Here’s a quick look at what’s different.

Chiropractic care coverage change

Due to a change in Minnesota law, chiropractic services are no longer covered for Medicaid and MinnesotaCare enrollees who are 21 or older. As a result, your Hennepin Health insurance no longer pays for chiropractic care if you are 21 or older.

We encourage you to talk with your primary care provider about other ways to manage symptoms and stay healthy. Your provider may be able to recommend other treatments or services that are still covered by your insurance.

Limits on physical and occupational therapy visits

There are new limits on how many therapy visits are covered per year unless additional services are approved by Hennepin Health when requested by your provider. Those limits are:

  • 14 visits per year for physical therapy
  • 24 visits per year for occupational therapy

If you need more visits, you can ask your doctor for special approval, called “prior authorization.” (Not all prior authorization requests are approved.)

Prior authorization decisions

The timing of some prior authorization decisions is changing:

  • Standard prior authorization decisions for services (except outpatient drugs) must be decided within 5 business days of receipt of the request for services. The previous timeframe was 10 business days.
  • Urgent prior authorization requests must be determined within 48 hours (including one business day) of receipt of the request for services. The previous timeframe was 72 hours.
  • Standard appeals must be resolved within 15 days of receipt with a potential extension of 4 days. The previous timeframe was 30 days.

Keep your child healthy with free checkups

Did you know that children and teens who are Hennepin Health members can get free checkups? These visits are called Child and Teen Checkups (C&TC), and they help make sure your child is growing up healthy and strong.

What is a Child and Teen Checkup?

C&TC visits are regular health care checkups for kids and teens under 21. During these visits, the providers check your child’s:

  • Growth and development
  • Hearing and vision
  • Teeth and overall health
  • Vaccines and lab tests
  • Mental and emotional well-being

You can also ask questions about your child’s behavior, learning, or parenting support.

When should my child go for a checkup?

Children should get checkups at these ages:

  • Infants: 0-1 month, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months
  • Toddlers: 15, 18, 24, and 30 months
  • Kids & Teens: Every year from age 3 to 17

These visits help catch any health problems early — before they become bigger issues.

Need help getting to the visit?

Hennepin Health Member Services can help with:

  • Scheduling checkups with an in-network provider
  • Scheduling transportation to the visit
  • Scheduling interpreter services for the visit (including spoken language interpreters and American Sign Language interpreters)

The power of prevention: why yearly health exams matter

Staying healthy gets even more important as we age — and yearly checkups play a big role. For Hennepin Health members, annual wellness visits are covered and give you time with your provider to create or update your health plan.

These visits help catch issues early, manage existing conditions, and keep your vaccines and screenings up to date. Think of it as a yearly tune-up — a small investment of time that can make a big difference in how you feel and function every day.

Even if you feel fine, exams can uncover silent problems like high blood pressure or early signs of disease before they become serious. Your doctor can also guide you on nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being — all key parts of staying independent and active.

Take charge of your health: schedule your yearly wellness visit today. You can search for in-network providers in our provider directory or call Hennepin Health Member Services at 612-596-1036 (TTY 711), Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

How care coordination helps with diabetes and depression

If you have both diabetes and depression, managing your health can feel overwhelming. But there’s good news — care coordination can help make things easier.

What is care coordination?

Our care coordinators are social workers or nurses who help members connect and engage with primary care providers and the health care system. Care coordinators:

  • Support members to achieve their health goals
  • Link members to health and community services
  • Help members take an active role in their care
  • Work to improve members’ overall well-being

How can I learn more about care coordination?

Call Hennepin Health Member Services at 612-596-1036 (TTY 711), Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
