The Future of Hennepin Health Systems

Yesterday, the Hennepin County Board voted to assume interim oversight of Hennepin Healthcare System in order to stabilize its finances, protect patient care, and safeguard public resources. I want to ensure that our work stabilizing HHS will be transparent and included an amendment to request a report by July 2026 that will summarize the work we have done, the state of the hospital system at that time, and any further recommendations to ensure prolonged stability in finances, operations, and governance.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to voice their opinion. This emergency action aims to stabilize HHS, keep the doors open, and hand it back to an independent board as soon as possible. Waiting would risk losing the hospital altogether. This step allows us to protect access to care for everyone in the State of Minnesota.

You can’t fix a hospital that’s already closed – this is our chance to keep it open. While this will be difficult and there will be very hard decisions to be made, I am focused on putting the right structures, oversight, and financial safeguards in place so that when HHS does transition back to independent governance, it can be stronger and more sustainable than ever.
