Tragic Loss and Public Safety Alert

Heather Edelson, District 6 Commissioner

District 6 neighbors,

It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that I share the devastating news that Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were tragically murdered in their home this morning.

Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were also critically injured, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. I understand they are now out of surgery and receiving care.

Reports indicate that a list was found targeting DFL-aligned lawmakers and public officials. This is an unthinkable act of political violence against individuals who have dedicated their lives to public service.

Today is a horrific, dark day for Minnesota. I had the honor of serving alongside Melissa in the Minnesota House for six years. I saw her and Mark just two days ago - both happy that session had adjourned and looking forward to a summer they will now never see. Their children will never see their parents again.

There are no words to fully express the grief and shock of this tragedy. My heart is with their families.

At this time, the suspect remains at large. I urge everyone in our community to stay alert and prioritize your safety today. Please check on your loved ones and follow any guidance from law enforcement as the investigation unfolds.
